It's STD Awareness Month - so let's talk
April is STD Awareness Month, so let’s discuss this often refrained-from topic. First off, STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) also called STIs (sexually transmitted infections) can affect any person who is sexually active. STDs don’t discriminate - they can be contracted regardless of your age, gender, background, etc. Prevention is possible and so is managing your symptoms if you do have an STD. Whether you are 18 or 65 years old, if you are sexually active, you need to make sure you know a thing or two about STDs.
You may not realize just how common STDs are - approximately 20-million new cases are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. (ashasexualhealth.org). It’s possible that the lack of education, knowledge, and understanding of STDs is why they are so common. Do some research and don’t be afraid to discuss this topic with your doctor. Take a look at credible websites like the cdc.gov and browse materials, like those linked below, related to STD education.
- STD Fact Sheets
- The Lowdown - How to Prevent Sexually Transmitted Diseases
- Proper Male Condom Use
- Risks of spreading STDs through Oral Sex
It’s important to know that engaging in sexual activity will alwaysput you at risk for contracting an STD. Before you make that choice, ask yourself a few personal questions such as:
- Why am I choosing to be sexually active?
- How often, if at all, will I get tested for STDs? What about my partner(s)?
- How will I protect myself and my partner(s)?
- What will my plan of action be if I or my partner(s) contract an STD?
Knowing and understanding the background of STDs can be confusing and even frustrating. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of resources on the internet alone that can make learning and education very difficult. How do you know what’s true and what isn’t? Myths and facts surrounding this topic are endless and not always credible. It’s encouraged that you have an open discussion with your doctor to ensure your questions are answered thoroughly and truthfully. Medical providers often have pamphlets or informational brochures you can take home to read over with your partner as well - so you’re both learning together.
Aside from talks with your doctor and researching plausible sources for educational information - the best thing you can do for yourself is get tested! Many STDs don’t yield any symptoms and if left undetected and untreated, some can cause serious health concerns.
