Immunization Season is Upon Us!

August 2, 2018

August is National Immunization Awareness Month and every SIHF Healthcare location provides pediatric vaccinations your child may be due for.

It’s no secret that immunizations are a source of anxiety and fear for many children. We recognize that these appointments are not only stressful for your child, but for you as well. No parent wants to see their little one cry big elephant tears each time a vaccination is necessary. You can rest assured though because SIHF Healthcare is offering some tips to help your child quiet their fears during this time.

Comforting Babies:
Physical contact is key in comforting your baby when they are due for immunizations. Doctors recommend parents cuddle their child in an upright position and stay calm for the duration of the visit. Breastfeeding before, during, or after the vaccinations may help soothe your baby as well.

Topical anesthetic creams can help and should be applied to the injection site 30-60 minutes beforehand. You can also try giving your baby some sugar water just before your appointment; it will release natural pain-reducing chemicals in the brain. To make the sugar water, simply boil water for two minutes, mix 10 milliliters of water with one teaspoon of sugar, and let cool before giving to your baby.

Distracting Toddlers:
Depending on how well your toddler reacts to getting immunizations, you may want to hold off on talking to them about their impending appointment. If your child prefers notice, discuss the experience a few days ahead of time. During the vaccination, encourage your toddler to take deep breaths to remain calm.

The short attention spans of toddlers work to your advantage in these situations. Distract them from the shot by playing a game, singing, or counting. More often than not, this distraction will hold their attention long enough for the vaccination to be administered without much fuss.

Engaging School-Aged Children:
As your child ages, it becomes harder to distract them during vaccination appointments. Encourage them to take deep breaths; it will help them relax and stay calm until the doctor is finished. You can distract them with some music, or apps and games on your cell phone.

After the appointment, it's encouraged to offer your child a treat for a job well done - just be sure to present it as a reward, rather than a bribe. For example, use the phrase, “We can get some ice cream after your doctor’s appointment,” instead of “I’ll let you have ice cream if you get your shots.”

SIHF Healthcare’s board-certified pediatricians and pediatric nurse practitioners are well versed in the stresses that accompany immunizations. Let us help make this process easier on you and your child. Schedule your vaccination appointment today and breathe easy knowing that your child is in good hands.
